How to Create and Maximize Your Morning Routine

The best thing I ever did after becoming a mom was developing a morning routine. It has not only made my morning less hectic, it has helped streamline and make our whole family more productive.

Do You Have a Morning Routine?

How many times do you press the snooze button before you get up in the morning and putt off the inevitable of getting out of bed and starting the day ?

Perhaps you spend just a little too much time in bed before emerging and then have to rush.  

You then ignore your grumbling tummy, contemplate if you can get away without showering, your hair sulking and hoping no one notices that you didn't iron your clothes. 

Mornings - love 'em or hate 'em, every day has one. And, i f you're not a morning person, starting every day feeling tired, grouchy, grumpy, stressed out and rushed has a significant impact on your day.  

So if you are more of an owl than an early bird, keep reading because I'm going to share some simple ways to make your mornings a delight.

My morning routine used to be: 

  • Leave getting up until the last possible second;

  • Get ready for work with no plan for an outfit in sight;

  • Feel grumpy, grouchy and tense;

  • Feel stressed as I rush out of the door;

  • Maybe remember to shove a breakfast bar in my bag.

Not the best start to the day, but not unusual for most people.  So if that sounds all too familiar, perhaps its time to change your morning routine and allows you to have more energy, positivity, calmness and focus for a more productive day.

Keys to a Successful Morning Routine

  1. The night before. Yup, it starts the night before. They key to a successful morning is to prep as much as you can before that morning comes. For us that looks like having clothes already picked out for both E and me. I have my workout clothes laid out and ready to be put on. E’s bag is packed for school and by the back door. My lunch is already packed and in the fridge just waiting for me.

    I also have reminders strategically placed. If I need to remember something extra there is a post-it note on the back door. If I need to go online for something I have a calendar entry in my phone. I also make sure the family calendar is updated. If you fail to prepare, you will fail.

  2. Wake up Before the Kids. This is crucial. Having that hour before I have to get E up is the difference between scary mommy and put-together mom. I started waking up before E when she was about 5 months old. I did it two times a week and went to a bootcamp. Those two days were glorious. I was much less stressed and felt more prepared because I was hustling just to go pee. Fast forward to today, and I get up 5 days a week at 4:45 am. I spend 30 minutes reading a devotional or journaling and having uninterrupted quiet time. I then do my workout for 30 minutes. Journaling helps reduce stress, increases self awareness and self acceptance and is a powerful tool to use. So, I have all the me time done before E even gets up and hubby isn’t out the door.

    I admit it took a bit of an adjustment period to get into the habit of waking up every day that early, but I did it in increments. I started with two days a week getting up at 5:05. Then I started getting up every morning at 5:25 and just working out. Finally, I was able to get out of bed every morning at 4:45. I lay my workout clothes out the night before and refuse to hit snooze. Those days when I wake up at 6am just like E, its just not as fluid.

  3. Have a Breakfast Plan. Weekday mornings for us are not made for full-on breakfasts. E knows that she has a few items to choose from for breakfast each morning. By having a list, it takes less time, but she also feels like she has a choice (so win win).

    For you that may mean baking muffins for the week or egg muffin cups. For us, its fresh fruit, or waffles or yogurt.

  4. Create a Calming Mood. I know this sounds crazy, but it was a game changer for me. My first husband rocked out to Michael Jackson in the morning. Yup, it got him pumped and ready to go. It drove me nuts. It was too loud, to upbeat and I went out the door stressed out. My life is chaotic enough without raucous music, so for me, I need peace and quiet. Once E is set with her breakfast and her TV time for the day, I retreat to my bathroom and either enjoy the silence or turn on a podcast. For me those minutes of quiet or soothing voices is calming and helps prepare me for the barrage of questions and sounds I will endure all day long.
